Smoke, rubble and gunshot wounds have conjured images of Yangon neighbourhoods as “battlegrounds” this week, and though the term helps emphasise the severity of the situation, it can also be slightly misleading.

Myanmar’s New Year festival of Thingyan is the country’s biggest public holiday—normally a week of nation-wide celebration and water-fights, with soaked revellers partying late into the night.

A well-known Myanmar actor, his wife, and his father-in-law are being charged for a horrific acid attack and assault on a teenage domestic maid.

Yangon’s regional government has reportedly ordered the closure of nightclubs, karaoke bars (KTVs), and massage parlours in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The fire started at about 5am in Kafe in Town, according to sources, and has caused the temporary closure of popular restaurant Rangoon Tea House, which is located two doors down.

The initiative has been warmly welcomed in a city choked with traffic.
