Myanmar Mix readers raise over $1,000 in a day for Yangon Animal Shelter

Thanks to Myanmar Mix readers, Yangon Animal Shelter raised US$1,140 in 24 hours following an urgent appeal for help.

On Tuesday, we told readers about the shelter’s dire financial straits due to a drop in regular donations.

With people understandably pouring attention and resources into the fight against the global coronavirus outbreak, we expected a limited reaction.

However, readers began contacting the nonproft organisation and donating funds through Paypal and bank transfers within hours.

These donations will help provide dried dog food and rice to more than 600 rescue dogs.

Amazingly, the flow of donations has not stopped—every single cent or kyat will go towards providing these animals with a better, more secure life, covering costs such as medicine, charcoal for cooking food, and salaries for the 12 workers.

“We want to share our sincere gratitude for your support during these uncertain times,” Terryl Just, founder of the refuge, tells our readers.

“As you know, we were low on funds and your donations will have a significant and direct impact in the lives of the animals at the shelter. Thank you.”

Myanmar Mix also teamed up with Parami Pizza Downtown to hold a fundraising cocktail party for the shelter tonight (Thursday) but the event has been postponed due to the increasing severity of the coronavirus outbreak.

Parami Pizza Downtown is still accepting donations of rice, dog food, bottles of bleach, blankets, and funds, which will be transported to the refuge.

You can visit the shelter’s website or make donations by contacting the shelter for its Myanmar bank account information or through PayPal at [email protected].
