The body of a Yangon climber who fell while descending Kachin state’s Mount Phangran Razi has been recovered, reported local media.
Saint Htet, 28, was attempting an ascent of the 14,199-foot mountain on the Myanmar-India border early April as part of 20-strong amateur climbing team The Summiter Group.
After travelling from Putao, a town at the foot of the Himalayas, Saint Htet and her team members successfully summited the peak on April 12.
But on the descent she slipped and fell into a 2,000-foot deep icy ravine, said her fellow climbers, who were unable to retrieve her body.
Describing the tragedy as a “great loss,” family and friends paid tribute to Saint Htet as a “guiding lighthouse” and a “big-hearted adventurer.”
Kyin Oo, vice chairman of the Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Federation, began a fund to find her body.
During a second recovery operation, on May 24, a search team found the body of Saint Htet and brought it to Putao Hospital for autopsy.
“We have informed her parents and they are on the way to Putao,” U Joseph, leader of the search team, told state media. “Her body is expected to be cremated here.”
The eldest of three siblings, Saint Htet was born in Mayangone township and graduated with a business management degree from Brunel University, London in 2015.
Mount Phangran Razi was the first major hiking trip for The Summiter Group.
