From Kiev to Seoul, Toronto to Tokyo, many major cities have shopping scenes buried underground in their subways. Yangon is set to join their ranks, on a much smaller level, with the opening of a subway in late January 2021.
Construction on the underpass crossing underneath the busy Pyay Road outside shopping mall Junction Square is 85 percent complete, according to state media.
It will include a row of small shops, three escalators and two elevators, connecting Yangon University of Education and Junction Square.
Yangon City Development Committee, which is building the tunnel, stated it is designed to withstand earthquakes, which we would hope.
