Nothing quite goes with a pandemic and imminent economic meltdown than massive hungry crocodiles escaping from an enclosure and into the city.
But the management of Yangon’s Thaketa Crocodile Farm has reassured the public that recent flooding won’t liberate the reptiles—immediately creating an end-times scenario that no one even knew was a thing.
Deputy director of the farm Dr Myo Min Hlaing told 7Day News Daily that although the water level was almost two feet higher than usual, the enclosures had been upgraded so the crocs had no chance of escaping or taking a bite out of the staff.
The upgrades were carried out after flooding damaged fencing at the enclosure in 2018, he said, meaning we are unlikely to see one of its 570 saltwater crocodiles stroll down Yangon’s silenced streets amid the current Covid-19 lockdown.
The farm, which is based at Thaketa Industrial Zone on the banks of Pazundaung Creek, closed on September 8 because of the growing rate of infections in the city. Anyway, let’s hope its residents don’t go looking for company.
