A Swiss official working at the United Nations in Myanmar is among three more confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country, bringing a total of eight.

The 58-year-old woman had been in self-quarantine since her return from Switzerland to Naypyidaw on March 17, according to a UN statement today.

When she developed flu-like symptoms consistent with Covid-19, she was taken to and isolated in a public hospital, where she was tested for the virus, said the statement.

On March 27 (Friday) she tested positive, said the UN, adding that it “expresses its deepest appreciation” for the government and hospital staff support.

A 29-year-old Myanmar man from Yangon’s Insein township who returned to the country on March 21 from the UK and Thailand also tested positive for the virus on March 27.

He was hospitalized on March 26 and is now bring isolated at Waibargyi Hospital, according to the health ministry.

A 60-year-old Myanmar tour guide who—unlike the previous confirmed cases—had not recently left the country also tested positive, said the  ministry.

She had been with French tourists and was admitted to Yangon General Hospital on March 25 after coughing and vomiting, said the ministry.

However, infection disease experts suspect the disease spread locally in Myanmar before the government began announcing confirmed cases in people who had recently travelled abroad.

All three of the latest Covid-19 patients are doing well, added the ministry.
