Yangon’s regional government has reportedly ordered the closure of nightclubs, karaoke bars (KTVs), and massage parlours in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Starting from March 17, the three kinds of entertainment business in Yangon must close until April 30, reported 7 Day News—although the directive does not mention bars or restaurants.
Cinemas throughout the country closed on Tuesday following an announcement from the Ministry of Information, which stated that Covid-19—the disease caused by coronavirus—can spread rapidly through mass gatherings.
It’s unclear exactly how the directive will be enforced. But the announcement stated failure to follow the order would result in legal action.
Since the virus first emerged in China’s Wuhan in late December, 7,842 people have died around the world, out of more than 191,000 cases according to an AFP tally based on official sources.
However Myanmar is yet to confirm a single case, which its government spokesperson said is due to the country’s lifestyle and diet as well as its lack of credit card usage.
