Myanmar filmmaker freed after 10 months in prison
A Myanmar filmmaker was released from Insein prison in Yangon this morning after serving 10 months for criticising the military.
Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi, an activist and founder of human rights film festivals, was detained in April following a Facebook post in which he slammed the 2008 military-drafted constitution.
He was sentenced under a law that criminalises incitement by publishing statements causing "fear or alarm" to the public.
The director, who received treatment for liver cancer months before his arrest, was often cheered by free speech activists while he attended his court hearings in Insein township.
He told media this morning that he wrote two film scripts in prison and plans to develop a filmmaking course.
