A Myanma Railways worker was killed when a train engine derailed in Mandalay region yesterday (October 20), reported state media.

The passenger train left at 9pm from Mandalay to Myanmar’s biggest attraction, the ancient city of Bagan.

But the engine derailed and overturned between Natogyi and Wet Lu railway stations, killing assistant driver Kyaw Kyaw Oo.

No passenger injuries were reported, according to state media.

A team of police and volunteers attended the scene and took injured driver Aung Naing to the township hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Passengers continued their trip to Bagan station on another train, said Myanma Railways. Railway officials said they opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment.

Decades of neglect under military rule have left Myanmar’s railway network slow and in a poor condition.
