A Yangon bus driver is facing up to seven years in jail after he allegedly abandoned a concussed woman passenger in a forest.

The 20-year-old woman fell out of the unofficial bus when it was doing a U-turn near Insein Park at about 9pm on November 23, police told 7Day News Daily.

She lost consciousness and was helped back on the bus by the driver who then left her near the Government Technical Institute, five bus stops from Insein Park, where she was found yesterday morning, said Police Captain Tin Latt, head of the township police station.

The woman was admitted to Insein hospital with serious injuries, according to the news outlet.

Police have charged the driver under Penal Code sections 338 for causing grievous hurt, 202 for failing to report an offence and 279 for negligent driving. Section 338 carries up to five years in jail, 202 carries up to six months and 279 carries up to two years.

In January, 2017, the Yangon Bus Service mostly replaced a notorious 300-line bus system known as Ma Hta Tha. The old system would see drivers race each other for passengers and make unscheduled stops while conductors were known for their rude behaviour towards commuters.

However, remnants of the system survive in the form of decrepit, privately-owned buses driving recklessly around the city.
