US President Donald Trump may add Myanmar to his controversial travel ban, with an announcement expected early next week, reported The Wall Street Journal.

Myanmar is one of seven countries reportedly under consideration for travel restrictions; others include Belarus, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania.

The restrictions would not necessarily ban all Myanmar citizens from entering the United States, but could apply only to certain government officials or certain types of visas, according to Politico.

If Myanmar were included in the restrictions, it would likely strain ties between the two nations.

Though its military still maintain significant power, Myanmar has been moving slowly towards civilian rule.

The country was part of the United State's “pivot to Asia” policy under former US President Barack Obama’s administration and is seen as a channel for reducing the influence of China in the region.

The Trump administration has already banned senior Myanmar military figures from travelling to the US because of atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.

The new draft of a travel ban law comes three years after the original order, which targeted several majority-Muslim nations.
