Thingyan treat mote lone yay paw (sweet sticky rice balls)
Expect to see lots of mote lone yay paw in Yangon over Thingyan. (Hsu Myat Oo)

Mote lone ye paw, meaning ‘round snack that floats on water,’ is a treat brought out specially for the Burmese new year festival Thingyan, which takes place this year from April 13-16.

Neighbours and family gather in the streets to make the snack and hand it out for free to passersby—a cheerful community event typical of the festival. And for a little prank, you can also hide chilli instead of jaggery inside the odd ball.

Preparation time: 10-15 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Overall time: 15-20 minutes

Ingredients

200 grams glutinous rice (aka sticky rice) flour

58 grams rice flour

2 tablespoons flour

250 millilitres water

5 tablespoons pandan juice (put the leaves in a juice blender)

5 grams jaggery

Shredded coconut

Instructions

1. Mix the rice flour, glutinous rice flour, flour and water in a bowl and divide the mixture into two pieces. Add the pandan juice and mix again.

2. Chop the jaggery into pieces. Roll the dough into one inch balls and fit one piece of jaggery per ball. Put the pot on the stove and add water. When the water is boiling, add the dough bowls.

3. Take the ball when they pop up to the surface and garnish with coconut shreds.
