A modest new eatery is finding success with an old recipe of traditional Burmese food served in a simple setting.
Thant does not put on any airs: it’s small, homely and dishes out cheap curries in its diner, which is based near Thuwana park on a curve in the Pazundaung Creek.
But its unpretentious vibe, quick service and tasty comfort food is winning over locals.
Diners sit cross-legged on mats at the short-legged tables, harking back to olden times when families would have their meals on the floor.
On the other side of the restaurant are normal tables and a row of hand-washing sinks. Thant, which means “clean,” has no need for menus, with customers choosing their dishes at the counter.
Within minutes the waiters bring over your plates—usually large portions enough for two—from the limited offerings. Choose from chicken, pork or seafood and fill your stomach for 2,000-4,000 kyats (the goat or prawn curries cost a little extra at 3,000 kyats).
Each curry comes with rice, and my favourite is the shredded fried pork that hits the right note of crispiness and isn’t too salty unlike in other local eateries.
As expected, the formidable nga pi, or fish paste, does the rounds, and people can help themselves to pickled cabbage, green mango, carrots, and other fruit and vegetables.
At 5pm, Thant offers fried rice for the same price as a usual set. And after your meal, you can indulge in some complimentary jaggery.
The place is packed with local workers at lunch so get there early for first picks. Thant’s roadside location is great for passing business but not so great for clean air too, so expect some pollution during rush hour.
