Mandalay police shot and killed a man who approached officers with a sword early Saturday morning.

The man, identified as U Min Htwe, 45, died at Mandalay General Hospital where he’d been taken after the incident, according to state media.

Police received a call at 4am saying a man was brandishing a sword on the corner of 66 and 14 streets in Daw Na ward, Aungmyethazan township.

Min Htwe was threatening people with the 19-inch blade, reported The Mandalay News Journal, and became aggressive towards the police.

Officers asked him to surrender and then fired a warning shot, but police said the man kept coming towards the officers, who shot him in the right ankle and the chest. No police or witnesses were injured.

Officers searched his body and found a national identity card and a train ticket from Lashio to Mandalay. Police are investigating more about his background.
