A former girlfriend of a Myanmar actor is suing the star for allegedly breaking a promise to marry her, according to local media.

Moe Aung Yin, 32, is facing a fine and up to a year in prison after his ex-partner filed a lawsuit in Yangon’s Yankin township court under Article 417 of the penal code, which punishes “cheating.”

News outlet 7 Day Daily reported the lawsuit was filed on November 22 and the actor was due to appear before the court today (December 6).

The last three years have been challenging for Moe Aung Yin, who rose to fame through his roles in popular films such as "Allan Za Yar" and "Gay A Htar."

He was arrested in Yangon for meth possession in August, 2016 and sentenced at Pazundaung township court to five years in prison with hard labour in November 2018

The following month he received a further 12-year sentence after being found guilty of possessing a drug for sale, but then in May 2019 a presidential pardon saw the actor released.

This is not the first time a jilted lover has gone to the courts in Myanmar. Back in 2010, The Irrawaddy reported that Myanmar academy award winning actress Pan Phyu tried to sue her live-in partner under the same law for dangling the prospect of marriage, only to pull it away.

Much of Myanmar society expects a woman to marry a live-in partner and looks down on a woman who has had more than one boyfriend in her life
