Myanmar aerobics instructor dances mid-coup in Naypyidaw
A screen grab of Khing Hnin Wai dancing in Naypyidaw as the coup takes place.

While it may be the bleakest of times in Myanmar, aerobics instructor Khing Hnin Wai has managed to bring joy with a slick mid-coup dance routine that captured the military arriving at parliament behind her.

The new internet sensation was doing a class to the tune of Indonesian hit song “Ampun Bang Jago” in Myanmar capital Naypyidaw yesterday when a convoy of heavily armoured vehicles rolled up to a roadblock.

It is thought the Facebook video (watch it here) was filmed just after government leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, had been detained in the capital, as General Min Aung Hlaing seized power.

Khing Hnin Wai, who describes herself as a PE teacher at the Ministry of Education, does not miss a beat, dancing the coup away in a lime green and black outfit as if the whole thing is a bad dream.

Sadly, it is all too real. The Tatmadaw has removed 24 ministers and deputies, overthrowing the democratically elected government and announcing 11 generals in its new administration.

Stay tuned to Myanmar Mix for more updates. And thank you Khing Hnin Wai for bringing us that moment amid the madness.
