A 47-year-old man was charged yesterday for his alleged role in holding up a Yangon bank using a fake bomb.

Officers believes the suspect, Soe Soe Kyaw, robbed a CB Bank branch on February 7 using a bundle of fake dynamite strapped to a cell phone.

The suspects stole 60 million kyats (US$41,200) from the bank in North Dagon township before driving off in a Toyota Probox, a car commonly used by taxi drivers in Yangon.

Information from local residents led to the man’s arrest in the same township, said police in a statement. About $32,000 in kyat and dollars were seized along with a Toyota Probox.

Soe Soe Kyaw reportedly told police the gun used in the robbery was also fake. He has been charged under section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years for robbery.

Police are continuing to search for a second suspect.
