A 22-year-old man has been injured after a crocodile pounced on him at the edge of Ayeyarwady River.

The attack took place when Nay Lin Oo was emptying water out of his boat at his village in Ayeyarwady region’s Bogale township on Tuesday (October 8).

He is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital and his condition is stable, reported state media.

Although crocodile attacks occur yearly in Myanmar’s delta region, data is scarce on the frequency and timing of the incidents.

State media reported five attacks last year, while in June, 2016, a 29-year-old woman from the same township was killed by a reptile reportedly measuring more than 12 feet in length.

Mein-ma-hla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the township at the mouth of the river, is known for its crocodile hatching sites and mangrove forests, which are in decline.

Dozens of the reptiles are believe to live within the boundaries of the wetland reserve, pushing wildlife conservation groups to erect signs warning local people of the danger posed by the crocodiles.
