Yangon regional government imposed a 10pm-4am curfew for all townships starting from April 18 in response to a rise in Covid-19 cases.

Six new Covid-19 cases were reported today—all from Yangon—and one death, a 78-year-old man from the city’s Mayangon township, bringing the total number of recorded cases to 94 with five deaths.

The curfew follows a ban from the health ministry on gatherings of five or more people. But neither this ban nor the curfew order specify an end date.

Meanwhile, Yangon is set for its last day of lockdown tomorrow—a directive that ordered people to stay home unless for essential food and healthcare needs.

The curfew directive does not specify exactly what the penalty would be for violating it. Those who violate the ban on gatherings or five or more people can be charged under the 1995 Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases Law, which carries a prison sentence up to six months, a fine of up to 50,000 kyats (US$35), or both.

Two Yangon MPs told the Myanmar Times that the curfew was also designed to tackle a possible uptick in crime that may follow the confirmation of more Covid-19 cases and a new year in which people were forced to stay at home.

Mandalay's government has also imposed a curfew, from 9pm to 4am.
