An eight-year-old girl has become the youngest person to test positive for coronavirus in Myanmar, as the number of confirmed cases jumped to 20.

The girl’s mother, a 45-year-old employee at the International SOS Clinic in Yangon, tested positive for the virus on Tuesday after developing a sore throat and fever. She is being treated at Waibargyi hospital.

The mother’s son, 10, niece, 18, and husband, 47, also tested positive and have been transferred to hospital, the health ministry announced yesterday. It did not specify whether the patients had any symptoms.

The husband is a township administrator in Paukkaung, Bagon region, where he attended a meeting following a visit to his wife at the clinic before she tested positive, reported The Irrawaddy.

About 20 members of the township authorities had contact with the man and are reportedly in home quarantine, according to the news outlet.

The diagnosis of the mother caused the closure of the International SOS Clinic and the quarantine of about 200 staff and guests of Inya Lake Hotel, which is located on the same compound.

Meanwhile, Yangon General Hospital, which treated a Covid-19 patient who eventually succumbed to the disease, received a gift from considerate children on Thursday, posted NGO Clean Yangon on its Facebook page.

“This morning, we saw a kid drop off a package at the Yangon General Hospital’s emergency ward and quickly ran off,” said the post. “A ward sister on duty quickly went over to look at what it was. The contents made my heart flutter.”

The package was covered in plastic with a note assuring the receiver “there isn’t a bomb inside” next a smiley face—a good sign, perhaps, as bomb threats are not known for their assurances.

“Doctor, these hand sanitizers were bought with our pocket money and are donated to you,” said the other note placed among a pile of tubes.

“Also, please take care of your health. We trust you will eradicate the coronavirus. We pray this plague will be over soon. We don't know whether these hand sanitizers are good or not but we'd like to help as much as we can.”
